Sunday. The service gate, eleven at night.
Her hand came off the bar.
It did not feel like deciding. It felt like a hand remembering something it had been taught.
A man had once stood in a laundromat doorway until half past twelve for a woman who was buying bread two counties away. She had never told him she was sorry.
"I'm the one who came," she said.
Sloane didn't move. The engine ran low under her elbow. When she answered, the little downbeat was back, a hand coming down once on a table.
"Then you're the one who gets written down."
"Somebody has to watch that window."
"Somebody has. For forty years. It has never once helped."
Sloane looked past her, up the black lawn, at the three gold squares behind the hedge. "I'll tell you what I know about staying, May. I stayed two years. I have photographs of pears."
"Leave her the car, at least."
"It's the only car on this property he doesn't service." The ring went one finger over.
"I'll leave it somewhere with a bus. She'll get a phone call. That's more than I got."
She got in. The door shut with a small, expensive sound. The green car found the lane with its lights off, then found the county road with them on, two red points shrinking between the hornbeams until the wall took them.
Maya stood in the gap in the iron. She was the one who lowered the bar. It went down in silence, the way everything here moved. Then it settled in its iron cup, which was a sound after all.
She turned toward the house.
Across the yard, halfway up the annex's pale wall, the landing window came on.
This is the version that never happened.
The Keepers voted this path down. It got written anyway, all the way to its own ending, the darker one, the cost the crowd flinched from. If you voted for it, this is yours. If you didn't, this is what you were spared. Members read it every Sunday. Cross the line for $4.99 a month, or $39 a year.
