THE CHOICE

Friday. Vivian's house, the back room, nine at night.

Her hand came out of the lining empty.

It came out the way a hand comes out of cold water, slowly, with the feeling gone from the fingers. She stood at the foot of the bed with her coat buttoned over the whole file, and she closed the canvas bag on scrubs, a nightdress, a jar, a paperback.

That was all. Nothing had moved. A woman in pearls could have opened that bag at the gate with a deputy watching and found exactly what she had packed in it.

Water in the pipes down the hall. The slow count, coming back.

Priya came in on the door frame, lowered herself to the edge of the bed, and did not look at the bag. She had said she would not. She was a woman who did what she said, which was the whole of why Maya had wanted the bag to carry something.

"You didn't."

"No."

"Good." Priya let her breath out through her nose, the way she did at the end of a bad shift. "Then I go home what they charted. Resting comfortably. Fit to travel. Nothing on me, because nothing's on me."

"That was the point."

"I know what the point was. I'm going to tell you the other thing now, while I'm clean and you're not. Clean is the only time I'll get to say it."

She reached over with her good hand and turned the jar on the coverlet so its lid faced Maya. Vivian's writing. For the ribs.

"She's been bringing me a cup of that at nine and at four," Priya said. "Hot. Kind. Tastes of nothing much. I stopped drinking it on Wednesday."
