THE CHOICE

When the window closed, two in every three of you had sent her down the lawn. The Verdict is Go, 66 to 34, and on Monday she goes. To the third of you who told her to stay in that bed with his hands where she could count them: you were the careful ones, and the road below is yours.

She keeps both his hands all night. It costs exactly what you were afraid it would. Off the Record is the night she didn't choose, written to its end.

Keep this quiet.

Friday. The bedroom, ten to eleven.

She left the arm where it lay.

She turned under it, until she faced him in the dark. Then she found both of his hands, which was easy. They were already on her.

She brought them up between them. Palm to palm to palm. The breath on his knuckles, twice.

She pressed them flat against her own sternum, where he had pressed hers every morning since the wedding. She held them there with her one good hand. The bound one lay on top, light, a thing set down to be counted.

"Cold," she said.

They were warm. She said it anyway. It was the first time in this marriage she had run the ritual from his side of it.

"There," Daniel said against her hair. "You stayed."

"I stayed."

He kissed her. Slowly, his mouth warm, his hands kept where she had put them. She let it be warm all the way down.

It was what she had wanted since a hairpin in a drawer. She had it. Somewhere across a hundred yards of grass, she could feel it being paid for.

The clerk in her opened its book out of habit. For once it had an entry nobody could argue with. Ten to eleven. Husband's hands: here, both, under mine.

Blinds up. The lawn lay silver past his shoulder. Over it the pale wall showed nothing.

She watched it over his shoulder while he kissed her. That was the whole experiment. One pair of hands under hers, a hundred yards of lawn, a clock.

The clock ran out.

At eleven, the landing window went yellow.

Both of her husband's hands were under hers when it did.
