Tuesday. The gravel, the last of the light.

The gates were quiet. The windows watched. She had until the sound of his car to empty one pocket, and the evening, giving nothing away, began counting with her.

The careful third of her spoke first, standing on that gravel with the gold going off the hornbeams. It said: the only fact you hold about the typewriter is that it knows everything, and a voice that knows everything is a voice that was in the room. It said: the drop sits inside the gates, in the sightline of two tall windows, delivered in daylight by somebody invisible or somebody invited, and only one of those exists. It said: the family taught you that every kindness is a fitting. Why would a kindness made of typing be the exception?

The careful third had never once been wrong. That was its whole tragedy, and hers.

She emptied the left pocket into the right.

Both papers rode together up the lawn, the typed voice with her two flat-lettered words folded against it like strangers sharing a seat. Maya walked into the kitchen, set them on the counter, and turned the near burner to its highest ring. It lit on the first try. Everything in this house lit on the first try.

She burned her own reply first. That was deliberate. WHAT ELSE went into the flame face up, so she could watch her handwriting go, the flat, slow capitals she had drawn to disguise a voice nobody would now ever hear. The paper took the fire all at once, politely, the way dry paper does, and the two words browned, curled, stopped being evidence of anything.

The note went second, and the note fought.

Some papers do. It folded in on itself away from the flame, showed her the three lines one more time through the scorch; he waited, you stood, ask me, and then the fire found the middle line first, eating the doorway out of it. After that it was only light. She held the last corner until the heat reached her fingers, because the rules were the rules even now, especially now, and she dropped it into the sink at the exact moment burning became keeping.
