Friday. The kitchen, five past three.
She capped the pen.
It made a small sound, the sound a decision makes when it is made of plastic. She sat with the cap under her thumb for the length of one breath, looking at the three words on the page. Aired as usual. Then she closed the cover on them, gently, the way you close a door on a sleeping person, and smoothed the green cloth flat with the side of her hand.

She carried the book to the pantry. She set it between the cookery book and the box file, checked the angle against the photograph on her phone, moved it a quarter inch. Checked again. The shelf looked the way it had looked every morning of her marriage. That was the whole art of it. She had learned the art from the house.
Upstairs, a drawer closed on the first try.
She found him in the bedroom, sleeves rolled down, threading a belt. He looked up the way he looked up on weekends, with all the time in the world showing.
"Said goodbye to it?"
"I said it."
"It won't have listened. It never does." He kissed her forehead. "Four o'clock. Bring the face."
