One thing, since we tell each other things here. The challenge is the easy week. Stay past it. The issues that arrive in week two and three are where the habit either takes or quietly dies, and I would rather it took.

Saturday. The kitchen, nine in the morning.

Weekends, the house changed hands. Daniel in the kitchen with his sleeves pushed up was a different jurisdiction from Daniel in a tie. She had married both; more than a month in, she had yet to find the seam. He had the radio on low, some station that played songs older than either of them, and when she came down he looked at her the way he looked at her on weekends, with all the time in the world showing.

"Hands," he said.

She gave them over. Palm to palm to palm, the breath on the knuckles, twice, the heart under her fingers keeping its easy time. Five weeks of mornings had worn the ritual smooth as a stair tread, and it still worked, which she filed daily under things nobody would believe.
