The paper was under her phone.
She knew it by touch before she knew it by anything else. Her hand went to the nightstand the way it went every morning, to a face-down phone, cold glass, the thread that never moved, waiting to be read before her feet touched the floor. This morning the glass sat a fraction high. Something lay under it, flat, folded once, with the give of paper that had been rolled around a drum.
She did not move for ten breaths.

Beside her, Daniel slept on his back with his hands folded on his chest, breathing his unhurried climate. The blinds stood up the way she was allowed to keep them. Past the glass, the lawn was going from black to the gray of dishwater. The annex sat at the far edge of it, shut, a blank wall with a landing window in it, keeping what it kept.
