Tuesday. The back hall, ten to eight.

The hook took the key the way a habit takes a hand.

She had thought it would resist. It received the key with a sound no bigger than a coin makes on a counter, and the board was nine hooks, nine keys, eight names. Her husband had left at half past seven with a kiss on her hair.

She photographed it from the doorway, then close, the bright hook with its gray tenant under an empty frame. Then she set out a second mug and sat down to wait for eight.

The key turned on the hour. Shoulder first, canvas bag, the two-beat scuff. Marta read the room from one step inside, the two mugs, the woman who had been up a while, and poured her coffee without a word. She drank half of it at the tall window. She tied the apron.

"You've a week on you," she said. "Again."

"The trip broke."

"I heard. Her kitchen hears everything by Monday. Eat."

Maya ate what was put in front of her. At twenty past eight Marta carried the steel ring out to the back hall. Maya sat with her hands around her cup and listened to a woman who had hung a ring on the same hook for forty years stop walking.

The silence lasted four seconds. She counted them.

Marta came back with the ring in one hand and the gray key in the other. She set the key on the table, flat, and pulled out the chair opposite. The fourth time. Her forearms went down on the wood, still as a verdict.

"Where did this come from?"

"A drawer. Under a liner. Ten days ago." Maya kept her hands where hands live. "It was sent to me. Typed."
