She heard him stop.
The gray car had gone around to the garage instead of the steps, because the bay had it now. He came in the way Marta came in, through the side door, past the pegs, past the board. The city was on his shoulders. She could hear its weight in his stride. Then the stride stopped, four seconds from the kitchen doorway, and the house held the four seconds the way it had held them for Marta at twenty past eight, exactly, to the count.
She counted them at the stove with the spoon moving.
He came in with his jacket over one arm.
"There's a ninth key on the board," Daniel said.
"It was under a liner." She tasted the sauce, added nothing. "The bottom drawer in the cedar room. I was looking for a cardigan."
"When?"
"Ten days ago."
