The house had no staff on a weekend. Vivian brought the tray in herself.
"Tray up," she said pleasantly, to nobody. She set it across Maya's knees. Toast, an egg, a cup.
"You were on my lawn at midnight, dear. In your feet."
"I heard something."
"This house is hard on light sleepers. I've said so." The pearls got one touch.
"Eat. He comes at nine."
She left the door open by the width of a hand.
Maya ate the egg. Then she lifted the plate, because method was method. A sheet lay folded on the tray cloth beneath it.
