The trap worked. That was never the mercy it sounded like.

She stood in the back hall until the cold came up through the floor. Then she chose the lie.

It felt like choosing nothing. That was the first thing she learned about traps. Setting one feels like tidying. She went upstairs, opened the album called Paint & fixtures, and typed a note under a photograph of a hinge. Gone until evening. Tuesday.

She had argued both sentences through dinner without moving her face. The seven words were decent, and decency in this house traveled. It went upstairs, through walls, and arrived at the same two doors every time, and behind one of them sat a woman who built sentences with the word keys in the middle. Proof first. Penance after.

She was aware, distantly, of what it meant that the argument had taken her one evening. In October it would have taken her a month. The house was teaching her its arithmetic; she was a good student, and that was one more thing to look at later, in some year with more light in it.

Then she lay in the dark beside her sleeping husband, with the blinds up and rehearsed a morning that was still three days away.
