Thursday. The bedroom, four minutes past two.

She sent it.

The arrow went gray under her thumb. Three words left the field, rose an inch, became a small blue shape with Delivered under it. That was all.

Twice before she had cleared those words letter by letter. The third time took one press.

Beside her, Daniel breathed his unhurried climate, both hands folded on his chest. Across the lawn, the annex kept its dark.

The reply came before the screen had finished dimming.

Up. Break room. What's wrong?

She had rehearsed a hundred answers for this thread. None of them had been short enough.

Three dots came, went, came again. Two hours south, under fluorescent light, a nurse was standing up from a plastic chair.

Then the last one, flat as a chart, with nothing in it to read twice.
